Why have subscription models conquered software and music but struggled in manufacturing? “Understanding Products as Services” answers that question for product companies. The authors, Felix Wortmann (University of St. Gallen), Heiko Gebauer (Linköping University), Claudio Lamprecht and Elgar Fleisch (ETH Zurich), draw on years of research at the Bosch IoT Lab and on work with industrial partners. Claudio Lamprecht investigated Equipment-as-a-Service approaches as a doctoral student at the Bosch IoT Lab and today leads growth at Findustrial.
The book is written for practitioners. Part one shows how the layer model of hardware, software and service changes revenue and EBIT, and why Product-as-a-Service is a catalyst for the circular economy. Part two, the PaaS Navigator, takes apart six myths (from “PaaS works for Rolls-Royce, but not for us” to “PaaS is pay per use”) and walks through scope, customer gains and pains, service offering, revenue model and enabling technology. The 66 product-service patterns at the end are the part most of our Pioneers keep coming back to.
